Taş Mektep, located on Büyükada, was built in the 19th century and served various roles, including as a summer residence for Greek Orthodox Patriarch Sophronius and later as a Turkish school. After being unused for decades, a 2021 restoration project revived the building, preserving its historical character while adding new public functions like a library, exhibition space, and workshop areas. The restoration focused on maintaining the original materials, integrating modern elements, and creating spaces for collective cultural activities and experiences, with careful attention to the building’s relationship with its surrounding landscape. Photographs taken by Egemen Karakaya.
